Mythologies

Hi Everyone,

If you haven't already picked it up, you'll notice that Mythologies (the readings for this week) is a difficult text. You will need to read it very carefully and will likely need to do some research to make sure your clear on some of the semiotic principles Barthes discusses.

That said, in addition to reading the Barthes, I'm including the url of a very good lecture below which gives some historical context and expands upon some of Barthes ideas.

Take your time with this text--it can be very rewarding if it is read carefully. You will have great insight into the picture below if you do!

Some of the translations are just brutal.

I know that there are only so many copies of Barthes' "Mythologies" in the library and on (lameass 2-hour) reserve, so here's a site with this week's reading:

Link is good - real helpful.

Check JSTOR; it has great reviews of Barthes.

Also, I've been hating those CTV news adverts since they began telling us what Toronto is - these readings truly express my hatred for them in a more sophisticated, sarcastic kind of way.

Really, just watch these jokers on the T.v. recycle our Toronto as theirs, force us to agree that our Toronto is CTV news, all in an attempt to make us feel as an individual amongst other individuals. Maybe its intentions are innocent ... maybe.
